CARDINAL'S CUP THIS SUNDAY

Cardinal's Cup 2007 - Capuchins

‘Catholic’ sport will come alive this Sunday as 12 teams from across Sydney take part in the annual Cardinal’s Cup indoor soccer competition to be held at Sydney University.
“There is more expectation and interest in this year’s Cardinal’s Cup than ever before,” said Robert Haddad, the Convenor of the Sydney University Catholic Chaplaincy and the organiser of the competition.
“This is not only because the competition has gathered momentum over the past six years but also because the winner will have the opportunity to participate in the ‘Papal Plate’ International Soccer Tournament which will be held at Sydney Uni during WYD week,” Mr Haddad said.
The twelve teams competing in the Cardinal’s Cup represent a variety of Catholic groups and movements including seven university groups - the University of Notre Dame (UNDA), Campion College, the Catholic Asian Students Society (CASS), the Sydney Uni Catholic Society of St Peter, the University of NSW Catholic Students, the Australian Catholic Students Association (ACSA) and the Seminary of the Good Shepherd.
Other youth related groups include St Mary’s Cathedral Youth Group ‘Embrace’ and the Ukrainian Youth but the real teams to watch will be the Maronites, the Neo-Catechumenate and the Capuchins, who have each won the tournament twice in the six year history of the of annual tournament.
“It will be fascinating to see if one of these groups can manage their third Cardinal’s Cup or whether another team will come through the pack and snare the Australian spot in the ‘Papal Plate’ competition for WYD,” continued Mr Haddad.
The first 10-minute game is set to start at 11am, when St Mary’s Cathedral take on the Ukrainians and the final is due to commence at 3.30 with the presentation immediately afterwards. There will be seating available for spectators.
