Capuchin News From WYD08!
CAPUCHIN NEWS FROM WYD08! Around forty young English-speaking Capuchin friars came together in Plumpton (Sydney, Australia) to make the WYD pilgrimage journey as a group united in fraternity. The friars were from Australia, the USA, Canada, Poland, Puerto Rico, Papua New Guinea, as well as postulants from East Timor. The group was also joined by six Franciscan Immaculatine Sisters from Australia, the Philippines, Italy and Brazil. Having so many young friars together was an awesome witness and manifestation of Capuchin and religious life to the youth of the world, but especially to the people of Australia, who for the most part are unaware that religious life is still a reality in the Church. It was a great opportunity to evangelise, to share about our life, as well as to participate in the many WYD activities as brothers. For more news have a look CAPUCHIN NEWS

WYD Event: HOLY ROSARY and QUARTET FOR THE END OF TIME
Two absolutely amazing and moving musical experiences on the Thursday evening, 17th July, commencing 8pm (St Stephen’s Church, 197 Macquarie St, Sydney).
“HOLY ROSARY”, composed by Capuchin friar John Paul Russo (check out his bio, below), will be an amazing opportunity for young people to pray Our Lady’s Rosary in an interactive way through song, beautiful music and multi-media images to give a full-sensory experience, which will hopefully enhance the contemplation of the mysteries – a great way for you to reserve a special place for Our Lady in the midst of WYD week.
This will be followed by a presentation of Oliver Messiaen’s “Quartet for the End of Time”: a musical and mystical piece inspired by a passage from the Book of Revelation and written in a German prisoner of war camp during WWII. It is a deeply moving piece that has resonated in the hearts of many, putting them in touch with something greater than themselves. It will be performed by the Revelations Ensemble, including four of Australia’s finest virtuosos (Sunny Roh - Violin, Guy Spielman - Clarinet, Van-Anh Nguyen - Piano and Christopher Pidcock –Cello), and some of the WYD Choir and String Orchestra.

CARDINAL'S CUP THIS SUNDAY
‘Catholic’ sport will come alive this Sunday as 12 teams from across
“There is more expectation and interest in this year’s Cardinal’s Cup than ever before,” said Robert Haddad, the Convenor of the Sydney University Catholic Chaplaincy and the organiser of the competition.
“This is not only because the competition has gathered momentum over the past six years but also because the winner will have the opportunity to participate in the ‘Papal Plate’ International Soccer Tournament which will be held at Sydney Uni during WYD week,” Mr Haddad said.
The twelve teams competing in the Cardinal’s Cup represent a variety of Catholic groups and movements including seven university groups - the University of Notre Dame (UNDA), Campion College, the Catholic Asian Students Society (CASS), the Sydney Uni Catholic Society of St Peter, the University of NSW Catholic Students, the Australian Catholic Students Association (ACSA) and the Seminary of the Good Shepherd.
Other youth related groups include St Mary’s Cathedral Youth Group ‘Embrace’ and the Ukrainian Youth but the real teams to watch will be the Maronites, the Neo-Catechumenate and the Capuchins, who have each won the tournament twice in the six year history of the of annual tournament.
“It will be fascinating to see if one of these groups can manage their third Cardinal’s Cup or whether another team will come through the pack and snare the Australian spot in the ‘Papal Plate’ competition for WYD,” continued Mr Haddad.
